Thursday, October 7th marks the beginning of NAVARATRI, a festival which has been observed for centuries throughout India, in honour of the Goddess Mother in all her forms.
It is a nine-night long festival which symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil. We will be celebrating it witha KIRTAN (chanting of mantras) in homage to the divine feminine energy in the world and in ourselves.
Saraswati will recount the legend of how the Goddess, as Durga — the Invincible, one of her many manifestations — spent nine days in battle with the terrible demon Mahishasura, symbol of the ego and forces of ignorance, before vanquishing him on the tenth day.
We shall also chant and meditate together, invoking divine blessings to strengthen our courage, overcome fear and ignorance, and persevere on our spiritual journey.
Kirtan chanting is a fundamental practice of Bhakti Yoga: it dissolves the notion of separation by connecting us to the moment through sound, guiding us deep into our heart. It creates a sense of connection and unity: at first you are aware of yourself, but as time passes your sense of “me” evaporates.
Some experience this as joy and ecstasy, others describe it as boundlessness or timelessness…
In a world filled with messages about how we’re separate from each other and separate from the divine, chanting mantras together unites us in a way that no other form of Yoga does.
